6/12/11 Fairewinds Update: Hot Particles From Japan to Seattle Virtually Undetectable when Inhaled

(The more information that is peeled away, the more the story unfolds and unfolds and unfolds. – promoted by Caoimhin Laochdha)

Hot Particles From Japan to Seattle Virtually Undetectable when Inhaled or Swallowed from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

Original estimates of xenon and krypton releases remain the same, but a TEPCO recalculation shows dramatic increases in the release of hot particles.  This confirms the results of air filter monitoring by independent scientists.  Fairewinds’ Arnie Gundersen explains how hot particles may react in mammals while escaping traditional detection.  Reports of a metallic taste in the mouth, such as those now being reported in Japan and on the west coast, are a telltale sign of radiation exposure

.

In this update to his appearance on CNN with John King last week, which involves the same story & includes similiar information, Arnie Gundersen, chief engineer at Fairewinds Associates, analyzes the recalculation by TEPCO involving the increased amount of radiological releases. He also carefully sxplains the difference between the types of radioctive releases & the significance of each.

CNN’s John King and Arnie Gundersen discuss “hot particles” detected in Seattle and Japan, the cozy relationship between Japanese regulator NISA (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency) and plant owner TEPCO, and changes at the Fukushima accident site since March.  John King and Arnie Gundersen also discuss how TEPCO’s acknowledgement today of another error in calculating radiation dose more than doubles the amount of radioactivity to which people in the Northern Hemisphere have been exposed.

“…we’re at a point now where you just can’t run from the particles that are still in the air”

-Arnie Gundersen

On CNN with John King, Arnie Gundersen responds to the news that an error in calculation doubles the dose of radiation recieved in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as the confirmation that reactors 1-3 suffered meltdowns, which should have been obvious to anyone following the story.

The assessment is grim to say the very least.

The discovery & presence of “hot particles”, extremely troubling, its import & significance disturbing, especially for those on the West Coast. That this cannot be measured using conventional devices makes it a serious threat. What’s to say that as the contamination spreads, everyone in its path doesn’t eventually share the same risk, to say nothing of the Japanese people, and more importantly the workers.

Oh, and it’s far from over, and until the fuel pools stop boiling & releasing the radioactive contamination it will continue – Arnie estimates

“…they’re going to need another year or so before it cools down to the point it doesn’t boil anymore…”

4/7 Arnie Gundersen update: Fukushima Groundwater Contamination Worst in Nuclear History

(Note especially the concern that the EPA is not monitoring radiation contamination from Fukushima in fish! – promoted by Sue Prent)

5/3 Fairewinds update: Fukushima Fallout

(Our own Maggie Gundersen is featured on this video clip.   – promoted by Sue Prent)

Latest addition to the series of continuing updates of the Fukushima disaster graciously provided by Arnie & Maggie Gundersen of Fairewinds Associates. Maggie has a guest, Marco Kaltofen, expert in radiation chemistry & monitoring. He is a professor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, as well as an environmental scientist & professional engineer.

They discuss the spreading nuclear fallout. This closer look examines the effects & hazards of the nano-scale particles of fallout when tracking at greater distances, as opposed to the methodology of using a Geiger counter to measure the more localized background levels.

Where is all that Fukushima radiation going, and why does it matter? from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

Fairewinds’ founder Maggie Gundersen interviews environmental scientist and professional engineer Marco Kaltofen about his ongoing analysis of radioactive fallout from Fukushima.

The first ninety days of the next nine months

Winter always seems to linger & linger. The long awaited spring now upon us is enough to lift anyone’s spirits, especially here in the Northeast, where winters in general, the past one in particular, tend to be brutal. There seems to be a feeling of relief looking forward & hope of better days to come.

I’m trying! As the disaster in Japan, directly affecting the lives, safety & well being of its residents & neighbors, as well as the far-reaching & world-wide implications of unknown proportion become an aside & moved to the back page by msm, it cannot be ignored, at least by me.

News of Fukushima disaster all but vanishes leaving few lines to read between in favor of the typical frivolous fare (no, I didn’t watch the wedding). Our daily news, the important information we need, marginalized by mainstream media, scrubbed, sanitized, spun then spoonfed to the sheepled masses & gullible public.

We know this to be the standard. Nothing new & no surprises here. But when important news events are not being covered & information deliberately withheld, it becomes more noticable.

The msm news of continuing disaster in Japan which does reach us is delivered with the matter-of-fact calmness of a weather report. If not for the Gundersen’s regular & trustworthy reports we would be in the dark. We’re missing something but unsure of what that might be. We are aware this can’t be good, but how bad is it?

Four nuclear reactor containments, all in a neat row, looking like artillery-riddled bombed out buildings in a war zone from the explosions, fires, floods & resulting meltdowns serve to show the magnitude. What we do know of what is going on, is that it is still far from over. The latest report from Arnie shows the plan to cap the damage & contamination is inadequate & will probably not work.

Searching for other accurate & informed sources I stumbled upon “COTO Report”, my kind of news, hardhitting & edgy.

Recent claims regarding the time frame supplied by Japanese officials supposedly necessary to bring the present situation in Japan under control is nine months. A link to a website, blogger Lucas Whitefield Hickson, “Information Architect” out of Chicago provides a resource including many related links & information.

A recent blog post, first of three-part series, is an in-depth look at the first three of the next nine months. By analyzing the information & extrapolating from these sources he gives his take on what could be expected during this time frame.

Spotting Arnie Gundersen in his ‘tags cloud’, who he uses as a resource in other work, I knew I was on the right track.

Surviving Planet Earth in the Next 90 days…

April – July 2011 (3 Months)

Thanks to Rubicon Decision and SEH, without them this investigation wouldn’t be possible.

Earlier this week, TEPCO released its two step plan for bringing the Fukushima Daiichi emergency under control.  The plan is already in motion, and it has been stated that it will be completed within 9 months.

For everyone else, the question remains:

How will the world look in 9 months?

Japan undoubtedly will experience many more earthquakes, monsoons, and volcanic activity during the time required to bring the situation back under control.  It is unclear still how much radiation has been released, and an exact list of the radioactive isotopes that have been introduced to the environment is still not forthcoming.

4/27/11 Arnie Gundersen prediction: Fukushima disaster worse than Chernobyl

( – promoted by Sue Prent)

Russia Today: Gundersen First to Say Fukushima Worse than Chernobyl from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

April 27th was the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. Six weeks ago, when Gundersen first appeared on Russia Today, he said that Fukushima would be “Chernobyl on steroids”.  Japanese authorities are now admitting Chernobyl-level releases as the plant continues to leak radioactive gases and liquids

.

Again, and I know I’m not alone here, extremely grateful for the continuing updates as surely it is alot of work for the Gundersens. “Labor of love”, none of which they are paid to do.

To those following the Entergy/VY continuing saga, Mr. Gundersen has become well known for an uncanny ability to foretell events & partly why his information is highly regarded. And so, this most recent one that Fukushima would be “Chernobyl on steroids”, comes as no surprise.

As writer-turned-senator Phillip Baruth, D-Chittenden district remarked recently:

“Post-Japan, everyone wants Gundersen’s number, because our reactor down in Vernon is the same make and generation as those melting down across the Pacific. And Arnie has called every major debacle at Vermont Yankee over the last six years, one after the other after the other. Collapsing cooling tower? Check. Underground piping, both existence of and tritium pluming from? Double check.”

http://vermontdailybriefing.co…

One year ago to the day, Mr. Baruth posted a story to his blog, “Vermont Daily Briefing” revealing yet another inconvenient truth discovered by Arnie, this time it’s a state-of-the-art new reactor, the Westinghouse AP1000:

“[..]the whole structure is in effect a 130-foot high chimney, radioactivity could then be vented directly into the atmosphere.”

China has snapped them up & reportedly has 5 AP1000s under construction, and one more firmly planned, but I digress.

http://vermontdailybriefing.co…

Once again, Mr. Gundersen calls it as he sees it which was in fact yet another prediction,  Fukushima “Chernobyl on steroids”, present disaster worse than Chernobyl. Interestingly, events unfolding precisely at the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The catastrophic events at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan continue.

4/26 Gundersen Postulates Unit 3 Explosion May Have Been Prompt Criticality in Fuel Pool

(We have made a habit of bringing to our readers Arnie Gundersen’s thoughtful analysis of the still unfolding crisis at Fukushima.  An informed public is a responsible public, and there has never been a more critical time in Vermont for the average person to take an active interest in how exactly reactors go wrong when they do. Arnie makes it easy for us to understand some pretty startling facts of physics playing out before us in the current situation. – promoted by Sue Prent)

Gundersen Postulates Unit 3 Explosion May Have Been Prompt Criticality in Fuel Pool from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

When building 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi plant exploded last month, those who saw the video footage were left to wonder why it was more severe than the other explosions. Adding to the mystery were reports that the containment and reactor in building 3 were still intact. Gundersen discusses several known facts about Fukushima 3 and theorizes on a possible scenario leading to the explosion.

Expert analysis from Fairewind’s Arnie Gundersen, nuclear engineer

Arnie answers comments recieved regarding Fukushima reactor #3. Breaking down the evidence & analyzing information, Arnie gives his insight of what happened.

Particles of nuclear contamination including uranium, plutonium & americium detected on the West Coast & as far east as New England, also add perspective to the import of this event.

Fukushima disaster is not over simply because mainstream media chooses to ignore it. Interestingly, with Chernobyl 25th anniversary eerily present, I was amazed by the comparison & reminder that it was one reactor which burned for 10 days.

With next to nothing for information about the present status making its way to the public, personally I find these updates extemely helpful.

4/25/11 Fairewinds asks NRC to delay licensing until Fukushima lessons are evaluated

(As the Royal Wedding and conflicts in the Middle East claim the news cycle, the situation at Fukushima continues to be unresolved; a slowly unfolding disaster whose final dimensional impact remains unknown.

There are important take-aways from the disaster, and there are industry incentives to suppress that conversation.  Our own Vermont watchdog, Arnie Gundersen suggests there is no time left to waste in getting to it. – promoted by Sue Prent)

Fairewinds Calls for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to Delay Licensing Until Fukushima Lessons Are Evaluated from Fairewinds Associates on Vimeo.

Gundersen implores Congress and NRC to think outside the box.  Pause licensing of new nukes and 20-year-life extensions until the lessons learned from Fukushima are applied.  Fairewinds Associates recommends that regulators look at the feasibility of emergency evacuation plans, containment leakage, and aging management plans for 40-year-old Fukushima model reactors.

“Smart Money” & “Conventional Wisdom” declare Entergy prevails?

State will likely bank on power from Vermont Yankee after March 2012

by Jon Margolis | April 25, 2011

In the week since Entergy Corp. announced it was suing Vermont in federal court, challenging the legitimacy of the state’s role in extending the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant’s license, “the smart money” seems to have decided that the company is likely to win, keeping Yankee on line until 2022.

http://vtdigger.org/2011/04/25…

Whether the conclusion the writer arrived at based upon the sources given is accurate, is anyone’s guess. This would be difficult to determine since they’re all anonymous.

Conspicuously absent are any direct quotes or statements whatsoever from anyone who would allow themselves to be named. So, entire story merely conjecture, based entirely upon hearsay.

But most of the chatter among lawyers, and in the state capitol, seems to assume Entergy’s eventual success.

He said, she said. An “irreverent legislator” said, “most of the chatter” said, that’s a story? It could have been written in a bar jotting down comments made w/in earshot & arrive at the same conclusions.

Though “most” are assured of this eventual outcome, “none” of them would be named?

I should think if the money were so “smart” & the wisdom so “conventional” those possessing these assets would be willing to go on record. Since they were not, there is no way to guage the accuracy of the story which makes it dubious at best imho.

Eeny meeny miny moe. Only time will tell.
