Oven Explodes at French Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Plant

(Breaking news… – promoted by mataliandy)

According to a report in the AP, an oven at a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in Southern France exploded.

It was not immediately clear how serious the accident was or whether there were any victims. The Marcoule site is located in Langedoc Roussillon, in southern France, near the Mediterranean Sea.

I imagine more details will follow as more info becomes available.

  1. Does that mean that plutonium was released?

‘Guess we’ll only know if and when more details are released.

  2. A cute twitter comment:

#marcoule. Pour edf c’est un accident industriel . Fukushima est un accident naturel. Moralité: l’accident nucleaire n’existe pas.

    Translated:

For EDF (the Marcoule plant owner), it’s an industrial accident. Fukushima is a natural accident. Moral of the story: nuclear accidents don’t exist.

    Excerpts:

“Olivier Isnard, an emergency manager at France’s Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety said that the explosion took place in the foundry of the waste processing plant, which was melting down about four tons of used radioactive metal containing at least 67,000 becquerels of radiation.”

“The site is partly used by French nuclear giant Areva to produce MOX fuel which recycles plutonium from nuclear weapons.”

“This webcam is located near the facility, but has mysteriously been shut down for some reason.”
