  1. in national media over this topic.  Except for occasional video footage of the evacuation area or some such vague association, the story has all but been dropped entirely from the news cycle.  I am sure that many people think it’s been stabilized except for clean-up.

There is a kind of cud-chewing calm, approaching coma, that replaces orchestrated panic once any “disaster” is phased out of the news cycle.  Americans are a nation of “viewers,” convinced that there is a crisis only so long as it receives high-profile coverage at prime-time.   Good luck holding their attention long enough to impart any serious perspective.  The corporations work overtime to distract them before they get too wise.  “Keep it moving…keep it moving.  There’s nothing to see here…”

  2. Homer: … Didn’t you hear what that guy in the building said?”

Lisa: “But dad, don’t you think…”

Homer: “Lisa, the whole reason we have elected officials is so we don’t have to think all the time. Just like that rain forest scare a few years back. Our officials saw there was a problem and they fixed it, didn’t they?”

    Lisa: “No, Dad, I don’t think…”

    Homer: “There’s that word again!”

  3. None of the players with a financial stake in the future of has a significant stake in our mainstream media — I mean, that could lead to all sorts of speculation about reasons why the media might have shut up about this…
