Churches have always been excluded from taxation. But in these tough and troubling economic times, should churches be taxed and we change that long standing rule and begin to tax religious institutions? There is the argument that if churches received more money from its parishioners, then it would have more money for missions and other charitable causes. However, I have a problem when a Catholic church asks for donations for a new, larger church (that it genuinely needs), when you look at a typical photo of the Pope wearing and sitting on things that could easily pay for 10% the new church, perhaps much more. I think the church should be taxed, and I can’t believe it hasn’t been to date. Taxing churches would lead to the decimation of some churches unable to cope with the change, but it would help root out mega-churches that are primarily in existence to generate income for those running them, and maybe some missions as an afterthought. Also, it might force Rome to fork over a little more money toward the betterment of its Catholic churches around the world. I don’t see this ever happening in my lifetime, at least until we elect an Atheist president. Should churches pay taxes? Vote your opinion at Church Software Demos website and tell why or why not.
