Iowa Republican accidentally admits a wee problem with the “Alaska Carry” approach

Per Think Progress:

The Republican-led Iowa state House is considering a bill that would allow Iowans to carry a weapon openly or concealed in public without a license, permission from a sheriff, background check, or any training. The bill is known as “Alaska carry,” or the “Alaska bill,” because Alaska was one of the first states in the country to implement it. Arizona and Wyoming have similar laws.

The problem?  Aside from this being completely, over the top and insane, the Iowa Republicans know it’s insane.

Witness as the Speaker of the Iowa House refers to it as “The crazy, give-a-handgun-to-a-schizophrenic bill:”

But really, this is what happens when you treat the 2nd amendment as a religion, as opposed to dealing with it as an integral element of the Bill of Rights that needs to be understood and interpreted.  I have no objection to the right to people to own weapons, but I have a problem with them being able to own high-powered weapons in secret and I have a problem with them being able to do so without any sort of background check.  It’s a recipe for danger that has no real basis in the constitution.

In other news, blogs are scary.

  1. In another thread months ago for some data. Can someone show me how conceal carry, or carry, or simply having a gun in the home or car (secured or otherwise) deters crime? Surely, even with the difficulty a study like this presents, there must be something out there that gun rights folks can call in as backup when needed.

Has anyone here had a real experience where they’ve had to draw on another human? Did simply drawing the weapon scare off the assailant? Did you need to pull the trigger?

In the previous thread where I asked this, kestrel replied that wasn’t able to immediately post something up…. but a comment here, or a diary would be pretty enlightening from anyone with some data. Or even an anecdote.

And yeah. I know its a right. Just want to back it up with something that I cod get my head around and maybe learn something from.

  2. FOX News:Attempted Suicide Turned Manslaughter; Starts Riots; Raises Intellectual Religious Debate…4 hours ago

A elderly Polish man in Parma, Ohio has been charged with wreckless manslaughter in the shooting death of a Black man here today.

Peter Buknatski was apparently in the process of ending his life with a 9mm automatic in City Park when he was distracted by ‘Polka Music’ coming from a dive-by boom box.  In his excitement, Buknatski missed his head and the bullet fatally struck Adam Muhammad 10X, an 18 year old University of Parma student sitting on a nearby bench reading a book entitled No Safe Place But The Womb.

In reaction to the shooting incident, there have been several street clashes between Black students and members of the local members of the national Polish Gang known as Lech’s Brothers In Bowling.

Additionally, Buknatski’s act has prompted dozens of Right To Life supporters to call radio station WPOLSKI to inquire whether No Safe Place But The Womb is an anti-abortion text and whether there is a conspiracy of Black university students allied with Polish Roman Catholics to deprive the unborn of their right to keep and bear arms.

We will update this story from Parma as it becomes more and more stupid, cause, hey, we’re FOX News.
