The “My God, What Have (we) Done” Effect

Human beings are reactive creatures. We’re simply wired for crisis management rather than crisis prevention. I think that, more than any other event/message/policy is driving the post-election rebound in the Commander-‘n-Chief’s approval ratings. Very simply, it’s already water-splash-in-the-face time for those who checked out of last year’s elections (and the new House of Representatives hasn’t even gotten going yet.)

  1. From what I saw, the folks on our side did not, as widely-assumed, ‘check out’ on the November elections.  Obama is very likely for re-elect, in part because the R’s bench is so weak.  His favorables are on the uptick, in part because somebody over at 1600 Pennsylvania has thought about message and in part becuase of buyer’s remorse of the Rs.

Obama handed the Rs the House – and nearly the Senate.  We on the left were not responsible for this wipeout.  Obama can now head more safely into the arms of Corporate America while the rest of us watch the slow-motion-train-wreck that is our country’s economy.

  2. … has many connotations. I’ve used it myself on a few occasions, in the blogosphere…
