“G.O.P. Opposition Dims Hope for Arms Treaty With Russia” New York Times headline 11/17/10
I have begun writing frequent letters to Republicans in Congress who are taking it upon themselves to thwart good policy in this country so that they can just say NO to President Obama. Would it help if lots of us wrote letters every time we see obstructionism, or bad policy? Here is my letter for today.
Dear Senator Kyl,
I am very concerned that you are planning to shut down the Arms treaty with Russia, after having been a central part of the negotiations. I have 3 children under the age of 10, and it seems to me that a more verifiable Russian nuclear arsenal is vital to our National Security, and thus the security of my family. I understand that your party’s new goal is to prevent the reelection of the president in 2012. Please do not let that goal cloud your judgment about what policies are best for the American people. Please reject being a part of the faction of your party which insists on being the party of NO, and move to verify the Russian Arms Treaty
Americans thought things would change.
A report tonight from the Rachel Maddow show that Senator Richard Lugar is calling Republicans out on, “shirking their duties” to protect U.S. National Security by trying to further delay the vote on the Russian Arms Treaty. The main point being that the United State will lose the ability to physically eyeball and monitor the Russian nuclear material, and thus increase the likelihood of loose nuke material being “lost”, and ending up in the hands of…someone bad.
Maddow also went into great detail pointing out that Ronald Reagan is the one who developed the “Trust but Verify” system with Gorbachev.
My second letter of the week will go to Senator Lugar, for pointing out the fact that Senator Kyl and the other Republican Senators who are delaying the vote on the Russian Arms Treaty are putting our country in grave danger. All because they want President Obama to get credit for nothing. Thank you Senator Lugar for standing up to your party and standing up for rationality and the defense of our country.
This is not Disney land, or a Zynga game. This is real life, and it appears that most Republicans in the Senate are willing to put us in danger to bring the President of the United States down.
No. They don’t care.
