  1. Perhaps Green Mountain PAC will think twice before trying this kind of blatant misrepresentation again…then again, they probably won’t.

  2. I don’t much appreciate oversell, even when I agree with the political position of the organization sponsoring the ad.

Brian Dubie has no standing to overturn Roe v Wade. Leading off with that is a sure way to turn off anyone with a high school civics class under their belt, and casts doubt on the real stuff that follows it.

Not to mention someone should have proofread the ad: the publication they cite for the “would repeal Roe v Wade” position is the Vermont Catholic Tribune not the “Tribute.”

Sure, bottom line is that a Dubie Administration in Vermont could well make it more difficult for women on state assistance to get an abortion and might be able to curtail science-based sexual education and pregnancy prevention from being made available to high school kids.

But let’s not stoop to insulting the intelligence of our supporters.

  3. Today I had an opportunity to interact with Brian Dubie at my place of employment. It was the first time during this campaign season I have been face-to-face with the candidate. After listening to the Lt. Gov. give a standard stump speech for about twenty minutes he spent another ten minutes answering questions from our small audience of thirty people, most of whom were very sympathetic toward his campaign. One of the attendees (not one of the sympathetic ones) asked Mr. Dubie to give a yes or no answer to whether he personally believes abortion should be allowed in the event of a conception that was a result of rape. Brian did his usual “I’m Pro-Choice” but, blah, blah, blah, and proceeded to avoid the question entirely.

So, at the conclusion of the meet and greet, I had a chance to ask Mr. Dubie a follow-up question about his response to the abortion question. I brought up the fact that as I’ve watched him answer this question on a number of occasions, I’ve noticed that he incorrectly keeps referring to there being a “Federal Law” when he talks about abortion. I asked him if he would mind telling me which federal law it is that he’s referring to. He said, “Roe v. Wade” at which point I suggested to him that, in fact, Roe was a Supreme Court decision and not a federal law. At this point Brian got visibly agitated. He huffed and asked me rather contemptuously, “What, are you a lawyer?” to which I replied, “No. I don’t need to be a lawyer to know the difference between a federal law and a Supreme Court decision”.

To me our very brief interaction illustrates a major concern I have with Brian Dubie as a candidate for the Governor of Vermont.

I concede that many people view, and often refer to abortion as “the law of the land”. However, when confronted with the fact that there is not actually a “federal law”, I would hope that candidates who would like to represent us would recognize the factual difference and commit to using language that was factually accurate. Instead, in a very brief moment of opportunity, Brian chose to question me for having the audacity to question his understanding. He attempted to dismiss my concern by patronizingly joking that it must be because I’m “a lawyer”, which I am not. Apart from his assumption being unnecessarily condescending and slightly anti-intellectual, his response also showed me that Brian Dubie is unwilling to concede a point when he’s proven wrong. Instead he reflexively became angry and defensive. I don’t see how this attribute will serve him in his quest to “bring people from both sides of the aisle” together to address the issues that our state is facing.

If Mr. Dubie is elected Governor next Tuesday, I expect he will behave more in the manner that he displayed to me today whenever he’s confronted with challenges, rather than as the diplomatic statesmen he purports to be.
