  1. I don’t see them as attacks, but rather as personalized entreaties to Senators that can specifically be expected to listen.  I doubt that they are wasted on the Right.  In fact, I believe what they are attempting to do is to provide a show of strength for the progressive “side” of the argument, thus enabling the Senators to feel somewhat more empowered to “do the right thing.”  I should think that both our Senators and Congressman Welch would have the sophistication to understand this strategy and appreciate the cover it provides.

  2. 1.  If the Ad supported an environmentally and ecologically sound bill that made sense for U.S. taxpayers, I would like the ad as it certainly makes one catch their breath.

    2.  However, the bill is a boon for corporations – a total giveaway to lobbyists for oil & gas, coal, and nuclear.  The bill is a bust and an environmental nightmare.

    3.  This is our money – your money.  The bill does not structure a new green paradigm and move us forward to create new energy solutions and economies.

    4. I applaud our senators for waiting and trying to fix this bill.  As it stands, I would prefer that Congress trash this greenwashed bill and start again.

    5. I find it offensive that an out of state national organization like NRDC is trying to intimidate our elected officials.

This posted by NRDC on its website in 2006:

    Position Paper: Commercial Nuclear Power

This October 2005 paper examines the issues that prevent nuclear power from becoming a leading means to combat global warming pollution. In its present state, the nuclear power industry suffers from too many security, safety and environmental exposure problems, not to mention excessive costs, to be a viable alternate energy source. NRDC’s nuclear team sets forth several security and safety recommendations for the industry, and until those requirements are met, recommends more practical and economic alternatives to cutting global warming pollution, such as renewable energy and efficiency technologies.

The Kerry/Lieberman American Power Act takes your tax dollars to support a huge nuclear power plant expansion.  All this while there is no solution for the waste and the one-third of the old reactors either have leaking pipes, holes in their containment systems, have no idea what radioactive isotopes are really going out their stacks, are killing fish by significantly heating rivers and lakes, cost ratepayers billions in lost service for reliability and aging management issues, and in some cases like at Davis Besse have deteriorating reactor vessel heads!

Read nuclear physicist Dr. Arjun Makihijani’s book Carbon-Free and Nuclear-Free: A Roadmap for U.S. Energy Policy .  Dr. Makihijani is independent, not lobbyist supported, and has been doing energy forecasting since the 1970s.  You can download it here: http://www.ieer.org/carbonfree/
