Anti Health Care Bigotry

We're all familiar with the fight over what the Democrats were “required” to do to distance themselves from the Move On “Betray Us” ad a couple of years ago, right?

And a little over a week ago we raised the question here again on the issue of condemnation of the Mary Cheney “Department of Jihad” screed.

I would have to say that far worse than either of these is what we were treated to by the Republican teabaggers yesterday.

To this moment I haven't heard of a single Republican criticizing these racist, homophobic attacks. Have you?

  1. Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) just told our Brian Beutler that a short time ago, a protestor watching the House proceedings from the gallery got rowdy, yelling “Kill the Bill.” He resisted four Capitol Hill police officers trying to remove him from the gallery and as this was happening he was cheered loudly by dozens of House Republicans.

  2. That’s a sign from the anti-healthcare teabagger rally on the National Mall yesterday. There was more than one person carrying the same sign.

For the most part folks elected to Congress are rational and willing to work for the good of the country, while simply having different opinions about the path to take to reach that shared goal.  Sadly, it seems that in the last few elections, this has not always been the case, and thus there are some who appear to be openly against working together with people who have different opinions – to the point that they are more than willing to support and encourage violent rhetoric and the violence that inevitably follows.

All you need to do is read the responses to the terrorist who flew a plane into an American office building. (Gee, who flies planes into buildings again?)

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) told a crowd at CPAC on Saturday that he could “empathize” with the suicide bomber who last week attacked an IRS office in Austin, and encouraged his listeners to “implode” other IRS offices, according to a witness.

    and

    Made this video statement:

It’s sad the incident in Texas happened, but by the same token, it’s an agency that is unnecessary and when the day comes when that is over and we abolish the IRS, it’s going to be a happy day for America.

The wrong-wing extremists will resort to anything to avoid admitting that people with different views from their own have a voice in our democracy.

We are in very dangerous territory, and the Republican political establishment, by catering to the extremists, have put us here.

  3. The Democrats did not “distance” themselves from MoveOn and ACORN.

They passed unconstitutional bills of attainder against these two groups – one in response to non-violent, constitutionally supported speech that also happened to be an accurate description of a proposed military action; and one in response to a falsified video by a known liar against the one organization that has been most effective in registering minorities to vote (the video was made by a person who has since been arrested for felony violation of federal wiretapping laws, unlawful entry into a federal office, and conspiracy to commit a felony).

The latter of the two instances actually went to court and was ruled unconstitutional.

Democrats have to stop being afraid to stand up for our constitutional rights, or we simply will cease to have them. The more these crazy, violent people are encouraged to push the envelope, the more extreme their actions will become.

Lending legitimacy to their deranged viewpoints (via actions such as the MoveOn and Acorn votes), only encourages them to attempt ever more extreme actions.

    Enough is enough.
