Hey, maybe Welch’s ACORN vote WAS the right one after all…

These bills that are rushed through to score cheap political points (such as the condemnation of MoveOn.org for the “Betray-us” ad) are always lousy pieces of legislation. Not only are they often (as in the ACORN and MoveOn bills’ cases) rotten in conception, their actual texts are generally schlocked out hack jobs.

But sometimes, stupid bills can have unexpected consequences. From HuffPo:

The congressional legislation intended to defund ACORN, passed with broad bipartisan support, is written so broadly that it applies to “any organization” that has been charged with breaking federal or state election laws, lobbying disclosure laws, campaign finance laws or filing fraudulent paperwork with any federal or state agency. It also applies to any of the employees, contractors or other folks affiliated with a group charged with any of those things.

In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex. Whoops.

Laugh? Cheer? Put your head in your hands? All of these?

Damn, but Washington makes me proud sometimes.

  1. Companies with histories of misconduct. Here are some choice ones to begin with:

    • Lockheed Martin
    • Boeing Company
    • Northrop Grumman
    • General Dynamics
    • Raytheon Company
    • BAE Systems
    • L-3 Communications
    • United Technologies Corporation
    • SAIC
    • KBR makers of the troop-electrocuting showers, and e-coli contaminated drinking water, among other things.
    • McKesson
    • Computer Sciences Corporation
    • Humana This is the health insurer currently being investigated for sending a mailing to customers containing the lie that Medicare subscribers would lose their coverage if a public health insurance option were passed.
    • Textron, Inc.
    • Hewlett-Packard Company Whose former CEO is now running for Senate in California, after sent packing by HP with a $45 mil. golden parachute.  You’d think, given how heavy gold is, such a parachute would drag you to the ground like a lead balloon, but no, being paid millions for failing seems to be de rigueur these days.
    • General Electric
    • Government of the United States *This one’s my favorite!
    • Honeywell International Inc.
    • ITT Industries

    … Plus the other 80+ I didn’t list.

  2. Unfortunately, the better guess is that he bought into the Fox “news” hysteria.

I’d like to know how/why no one is sponsoring legislation to stop Halliburton/KBR and/or Xe from getting government contracts.

(It’s a rhetorical question because we all know the reason why…$$$$$$)
