Allen out as Times Argus editor

What the…?

Catherine Nelson, vice president and general manager of The Times Argus, announced today that Steven Pappas has been named editor to replace Susan Allen.

Allen, who has served as the paper’s editor since 2006, is staying on with the 10,000-circulation newspaper, serving as its Montpelier reporter.

I wonder what the deal is, here.

  1. I’ve watched Allen on that program where she interviews Douglas, and she’s not very good. Maybe that’s why she’s being replaced. I wonder how the TA can afford two Montpelier reporters, or is that Hinckley woman being replaced? Or is Allen joining the three stooges who report from the Dome?

  2. I’d heard that Allen wanted to step aside so she could do more writing. It can’t be fun editing the T-A these days, shuffling wire copy all day long and trying to make do with an ever-dwindling staff.

  3. It’s too bad, but perhaps she wanted to get out while she still could.  The newspaper biz is dying out now.  I wonder how long before the Argus goes.

  4. Rama, you’re probably right.  I agree with you about the local content, as the local communities love the police blotters:)  I do not think that this will, in fact, die out, just that it will become digitalized and things like netbooks or kindle will gradually replace the folding newspapers.  I am guilty and partly responsible for that change as I read most of my newspapers on the web now.  I even read books on-line now.  I feel guilty about that yet love not moving them around…
