Haven’t seen the details, though i suspect that if he’d been the captain of the Exxon Valdez, there would never have been an oil spill in Prudhoe Bay.

Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle. – Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I’ve talking about this over at FB and what bothers me is the culture-centric means this story is being reported. We’re hearing the story through military and government officials. What about Somalis and what “piracy” really is. No… I don’t agree with their tactics and I’m relieved that the captain from Underhill is safe. But I feel like there’s a cultural disconnect about what piracy (for lack of a better term) means and how Somalis perceive it. Jeremy Scahill, author of “Blackwater” and a DN! correspondent tries to tackle the issues that the traditional media isn’t doing. Not unless you read Alternet or something similar. Check out Scahill’s article here.
America, and FEAR Americans, more than Glenn Beck?
I want to throw up on all of these Republican-Americans who flaunt their unmasked disappointment that the rescue succeeded. They hate and fear of liberty, and their unbridled lust to see harm come to our neighbor in Underhill, just for the opportunity to use his misfortune for political gain, is sickening.
Caoimhin Laochdha, thanks for putting that up about Fox. It was sickening, but probably normal for those folks at Fox News, now out of their element in changing times and struggling for legitimacy. I wish someone would put Newt, Beck, and the rest of them on a pirate boat. I wonder what they are saying now. That should be good.
I am just glad that, this time, it worked so that our fellow Vermonter is coming home when, perhaps, it sure looked like he never would.
I hope that this also calls attention to the disaster that is Somalia now and maybe someone will start to try and help the place so that they do not have to resort to piracy for money to survive.
At least Phillips is safe now.
Not to beat a dead horse but there’s another good article to recommend. Check out “Why We Don’t Condemn Our Pirates in Somalia” by K’Naan of URB Magazine. Hope it provides some added perspective.
The Brattleboro Reformer’s editorial sums up the message best.
