Doyle Poll on Same Sex Marriage

Per WPTZ:

MONTPELIER, Vt. --  A majority of nearly 7,000 Vermonters completing opinion surveys on Town Meeting Day said they favor same-sex marriage. 54-percent said they support allowing gay couples to marry while 37-percent were opposed.

That represents an 8-per cent jump in support for same-sex marriage in the last year, noted Johnson State College political science professor and state Sen. William Doyle of Washington County who compiles the results each March.

This is not a scientific sample intended to represent the opinions of all Vermonters, but an 8% jump in support among a similar demographic is a major deal.

Not to be a wet blanket, but there's no way to know if this is a similar demographic. In fact, given the Democratic contest and the huge Dem ballot numbers, this could be a group that skews more left.

On the other hand, it's also more Vermonters - likely the last poll's group plus many more. SO that's good news.

It's a town meeting poll, though... (0.00 / 0)
...not a primary poll.  While there are a lot more lefties doing primaries this year, I've not seen any indication that there are more at town meetings.

You dont think its likely... (3.00 / 1)
...that if more folks were out to get ballots, that they didnt have an increased tendency to attend town meeting? I was a the East Montpelier TM, and folks were saying it was extremely high attendence. I'm sure it didn't hurt that the ballots for Pres were just down the hall.

Also - the cities, such as Burlington, Montpelier, etc dont have Town Meeting. Just a ballot, so its one and the same place.

Again, I don't wanna be a wet blanket, I just think we should be cautious about overstating what is clearly a positive trend, and in the process understate a continuing problem.

Fair enough (0.00 / 0)
I just hadn't seen any indication about trends of high attendance in town meetings save for places that had special issues on the ballot.

Having facilitated this poll before (3.00 / 1)
It should definately be called a survey.  It's approached from a scientific perspective, but the reality is it lacks controls.

I don't even think my rep let go of the stack at town meeting, he held onto it like it was a shield.

Because of its unscientificness, I'd rather not read too much into the numbers.  Though I would fathom a guess that peoples attitudes have changed, and it is a more homosexual friendly atmosphere in the state than it was back when Dean signed the civil unions law.

You also have more young people participating in politics, in part because of classes like Doyle's at JSC.

Providing the island woodchuck's point of view to the whole political spectrum!
