Howard Dean - Tonight - Free!

by: mataliandy

Sun Jun 10, 2007 at 09:30:05 AM EDT

After days (weeks) of jumping through technological hurdles, we've bade i to and through the 1st Day of DemocracyFest. Today is the 2nd and last day.

I missed all but a couple of minutes of every speaker, but Odum's coverage allows me to "see" them vicariously. but that means I can't give any cool accounts of "Encounters with Greatness."

We do have one of the most compelling speakers of the event coming up tonight, just before Dean (note, the rest of the event requires a ticket).

In 2004 Carlos Arredondo answered the door to find two men in uniform - waiting to tell him his son was dead. Alex had gone to Iraq and would never return home.  Carlos asked them to leave, and they refused. Learn abou Alex, about Carlos and Melida's (Alex's step mom) wonderful son, and their ongoing mission to end the conflict in Iraq.

Missed the Dean talk (0.00 / 0)

had to leave early as my ride was taking off.

That turned out to be pointless because I missed connecting with my husband and son for three hours in Montpelier, and didn't get home until almost 2AM. What an awesome bad thing! I could have stayed and listened to Howard.

Ah well, what I got to observe in DemocracyFest was a feast in and of itself. It's pretty clear democracy is alive and well and has a core group of activists with energy and talent to burn. Democracy in action was good to observe, as I have seen so little of it in DC for the past several years.

Great job, DemocracyFest crew! (0.00 / 0)

DemocracyFest was a true festival of Democratic values. There was enough diversity of opinion for plenty of good Q&As. Odum has done a good service in his reporting, and the DemocracyFest staff gathered an inspirational group of Democrats together.

There were definitely diverse opinions, but many shared values on health care and Iraq. Hillary support was tepid to non-existent at best. Nobody could really shoot down my theory about Bloomberg entering the race with Hagel and a billion bucks. That is the destabilizing potential I see on the horizon. I also see President Hillary as a done deal unless candidates are much more topical and transparent and bring greater inspiration to the base in their positions.

Jean Sara Rohe was my roommate and a presenter. She is the New School graduate who took on McCain a year ago in her commencement address and gained national notoriety. Jean is a fine musical talent and has deeply held political beliefs that shine through in the songs she writes and performs.

DemocracyFest was filled with talent, music, good oratory, and good company. I'm very glad I had the privilege of going.
